AR Murugadoss takes some time to set up his story (to show us how Shiva works) and also spends a few moments on the mandatory romantic track - here, it is Shalini (Rakul Preet Singh, with an almost perfect lip-sync!), who plays the director's version of cute girl, while she is a actually another addition to the canon of Loosu Ponnu heroines in Tamil cinema (even the director seems uninterested in these scenes) - but once you look away from this diversion, the portions in the first half are quite gripping...
Shiva's methods to track down the killer of a young girl and his friend, and the chilling flashback portion of Sudalai set up things perfectly for an engrossing thriller. And the anticipation builds to an altogether another level once Sudalai enters the scene.
However, the film kind of goes downhill after the interval. Scenes start to become far-fetched (an episode involving Shiva using women to save a family held captive by Sudalai) and after a point, totally implausible (Shiva trying to stop a massive boulder from wrecking havoc). And all this happens after a suspenseful scene that shows Shiva trying to save his family using his intelligence!

Hema Rukumani, the CEO of Thenandal Entertainment in recent interview says "We are proud at roping a big star like Vijay for the first time. Hope to recreate the Atlee-Vijay Theri magic once again."
The cast of Mersal includes Ilayathalapathy Vijay, SJ Suriya, Nithya Menon, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha in the lead roles while Vadivelu, Sathiyan and Sathyaraj plays a pivotal roles in this movie.Script writer Vijayendra Prasad of Baahubali fame will collaborate with Atlee for Mersal movie screenplay. The movie crew as follows AR Rahman composes music, GK Vishnu handles camera, while Muthuraj handles art direction and Anal Arasu makes choreography for stunts.

A few years ago, director Saran collaborated with Tamil
superstar Ajith Kumar for a film titled ‘Asal’. While the audiences had high
expectations from this one, it underperformed at the box office and left
‘Thala’ fans quite disappointed. During a recent chat with a leading website,
Saran spoke about Asal’s failure and said it was quite different from his other
films and did not project Ajith as a mass hero. Hence, audiences could never
really connect with it.
“My previous collaborations with Ajith sir before Asal were
very different. Also, Ajith sir is known to be a mass hero but suddenly he
asked me if we could try a different pattern without the mass punch dialogues.
In fact, he wanted me to do a subtle character with minimal to no dialogues and
a stylish film for him. Hence we got to do a script like Asal. What audiences
expected of the two of us collaborating was totally different from what came
out as the film. This expectation we could not cater to because we tried
something totally different with Ajith sir. This is why I feel the movie did
not perform well and become a hit,” he added.
In case you did not know, ‘Asal’ was an action film and also
featured Sameera Reddy in the lead. The supporting cast included names such as
Suresh and Sampath Raj.
On a related note, Saran’s latest film ‘Aayirathil Iruvar’
hit screens today. As far as Ajith is concerned, he was last seen in the
spy-thriller ‘Vivegam’ and earned rave reviews for his performance. Directed by

The first look poster of Thalapathy Vijay’s Mersal has
surpassed Thala Ajith’s Vivegam record on Twitter. The Vivegam poster tweeted
by the film’s director Siva registered the most number of retweets (31K) in
February and until this Tuesday, no other Tamil film broke its record. But
within 24 hours, Mersal’s first look poster tweeted by Thalapathy Vijay’s
official handle earned a record 38K retweets and topped the India and worldwide
trends.
As a birthday special, the makers of Mersal have also
launched one more poster at 12 AM today (June 22), which revealed the magician
look of Vijay in the film. In Mersal, Vijay will be seen playing triple
roles—village head, doctor, and magician. Touted to be an action entertainer,
AR Rahman is composing the music for the film and the audio launch is likely to
happen in the month of August. The film’s director Atlee and producers Sri
Thenandal Films are planning for a grand Diwali release.
