Hard work and perseverance, not mere degrees can deliver great heights; and Kiran Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Lalitha Jewellery stands tall to this claim and many more accomplishments. There are a few who carefully chart out their success plan, and there are others to whom it comes as second nature. Kiran Kumar of Lalitha Jewellery is not someone who has had his share of hardships to make his name and fortune in the city. His journey, he tells us, was a simple choice of taking the path less traveled. He calls Chennai city home now, but Kiran Kumar hails from the state of Rajasthan and has spent most of his growing years in Nellore, where he first began selling jewellery.
Not many know that the man behind this prestigious jewellery brand never received any formal education. Experience, he tells us, is what trained him in the craft. He came from a not-so-well-off family, where starting work young was the way to go. "My parents always said that I am not educated and they really didn't know how I would shape my future," he says. With a small capital, he started the business of selling wholesale jewellery - an extension of the family craft. "It was never easy. I traveled long distances to deliver orders and worked hard to establish a rapport with clients. I would make a home delivery for an order as small as 10 grams of gold," he explains, "I always knew that I would make money, how was the only question."
He spent about 6 years supplying jewellery to various stores within Andhra Pradesh and outside of it and managed to,generate enough capital to keep the business going. The turning point came when he first supplied to Lalitha jewellery in Chennai, in the year 1992. At that time, Kiran Kumar was also a supplier to various other leading jewelers in town, and Lalitha Jewellery was going through a rough financial phase. "Having been one of their leading suppliers, I was offered to buy out Lalitha Jewellery, and I (lid in 1999," he says. The store then witnessed a whirlwind of change, right from a chic makeover in appearance all the way to the introduction of export quality 916 gold. "We introduced the concept of 'no making charges' and ensured low wastage which, in turn, reduced prices considerably," he states.
The success of the store and the trade techniques they used led the brand to rapid expansion. What started out as a venture with a mere 35 employees now provides employment to more than 1500 workers in both Madurai and Chennai. "We have now opened a textile store in Madurai, that spans an acre and plan to start another one in Coimbatore soon," he reveals, "The next step is to broaden our horizons and enter the home appliances and apparel market. In fact, real estate is another sector I am looking at." Having had his share of hurdles, acclaim and success, Kiran Kumar chooses to live a rather modest life. Relying on his secretary to read out his messages and help him type, one notices he is not too much of a boss. "I like people calling me by name and not addressing me as sir," he says, correcting my need to follow protocol. "Even in times of recession, the one thing that remained unchanged was the salary of my employees. I treat my workers as family, and they do the same."
