account hacked really?
he year 2018 has been a tough sail for Facebook. After the
infamous Cambridge Analytica Scandal that affected over 80 million Facebook
user accounts, the company has once again reported of a new breach that affects
90 million Facebook users.
Facebook on its newsroom page posted a nearly 900-words
report informing about a new security breach on September 28. According to the
report, the engineering team of Facebook discovered a security flaw in one of
the features of the Facebook that could allow hackers to gain access to
Facebook security tokens which could then be used to sneak into user's account.
According to one of the New York Times report, the breach has also hit the
Facebook accounts of top executives like Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg.
The Facebook- Cambridge Analytica scandal opened the can of
worms and now the new breach is raising several new questions on the way
Facebook functions. There are many questions that need to be answered. While
Facebook says that it has already taken steps to fix the bug, there are many
questions that are coming to the minds of the users today. For example- what is
this new breach? Am I affected too? What are these security tokens?
The verbose explanation given by Facebook on its page may
not adequately answer all these questions. So here is everything you need to
know about the breach and how it affects you:
What is the new Facebook breach?
Facebook has a "View As" feature that lets you see
how your Facebook profile looks to someone else. To explain this feature
better, take this example- say you have created a post which you want to show
to all your Facebook Friends except one of your colleagues. The View As feature
will let you preview that post as if you were that colleague and then as if you
were any of your other Facebook friends so that you can be assured of the
privacy changes that you've made to that post. The vulnerability was in this
View As feature of Facebook.
The hackers were able to exploit this vulnerability to gain
access to the security tokens. The security tokens are like the virtual keys
that let you stay logged into your Facebook account without having to enter the
password every time you use the app. The hackers gained access to these
security tokens which could be used to login into your Facebook as your
colleague. In plain words, apart from the one security token that Facebook
generates for you, there is an extra key apart generated by the hackers that
can be used to control your Facebook account.
What is the security token?
Access tokens are digital keys that keep you signed in once
you have logged into your Facebook account. It is different from the remember
password tab that you see when logging into your Facebook account.
When did this breach occur?
Facebook has not cleared on when exactly this attack occur.
The engineers discovered the bug on September 25, 2018. Facebook says that the
problem stemmed from a change it made to the video uploading feature in July
2017, which impacted View As.
How many Facebook users are affected?
Around 50 million Facebook account has already been affected
and nearly 40 million are at risk. In total, 90 million user accounts are at
risk.
Have the attackers stolen your personal information?
Facebook has given no comments on this yet but if the
hackers sneaked into the user account chances are that some data must have been
stolen.
What is Facebook doing to fix the bug?
Facebook says that it has already fixed the bug and informed
the law enforcement. The company has reset the access tokens of the both 50
million affected as well as the 40 million that are at the risk of the breach.
Facebook has logged out 90 million Facebook users from their accounts.
The company has temporarily switched off the View As feature
until the security review is going on.
What can you do to protect your Facebook account?
It is the time to change your Facebook password. You can
also enable two-step verification to add an extra layer of security. Next,
unlink all the apps from your account. If nothing works, the best thing is to
delete or disable your Facebook account. Read this to know how you can delete
your Facebook account permanently.
