Legendary director Mahendran, who is known for his films with Rajinikanth like Johnny and Mullum Malarum, is admitted to a hospital in Chennai. He is critically ill, according to reports.

Mahendran is 79 years old. The veteran was on a break from cinema and started acting in films recently. After a long time, he played the antagonist role in Vijay's film Theri. He went on to act in a slew of films including Seethakathi and Nimir.

He was last seen in Atharvaa's Boomerang. He played a cameo role in the film. However, in Rajinikanth's Petta, he was seen in an important role.

Mahendran's son John Mahendran, who directed the film Sachien with Vijay in the lead role, asked fans and followers to pray for his dad.

Mahendran is regarded as one of the important filmmaker, who has made a huge influence on Tamil cinema. Many young directors still call Mahendran as one of their inspiration, when it comes to storytelling.
